How to know if someone is lying to you
Monday, November 30th, 2009For many of us, it is not as easy to tell if someone is lying to us as it is for Gepetto when he asked Pinocchio the same question (although that would come in handy quite often).
Lying is done for different reasons by people of all ages. At a younger age, lying may be done to cover up something you weren’t supposed to do that ended badly. At an older age, lying may turn into a malicious act used to get an advantage on people. Either way, a lie is a lie and it is important to know when one is being told to you. Here are some things to look for when you are trying to decipher this:
-Eye contact. If the person can not look you in the eyes when they tell you their statement, that is the main way that you can tell something just isn’t adding up. If they had nothing to worry about, then they shouldn’t be so reserved and sketchy.
-Voice. If the person’s voice changes pitch or cracks mid sentence, that is a sign of being nervous and unsure about themselves or their story.
-Body language. Strange or unusual body language is another main way to tell that something fishy is going on. If they seem uncomfortable or restless as they tell their side of the story to you, do not be so quick to believe them.
-Over defensiveness. When a person has something to hide, they sometimes tend to turn the blame to you, accusing you of being the liar.
Now that you are more informed, be sure not to be taken for a fool. Look out for these signs and protect yourself from any potential emotional harm.
